Abraham Lincoln 1865

Lincoln in his final days. 16" by 20" acrylic on canvass.

$120.00$800.00

This new painting is based on a photograph taken by Alexander Gardner on February 5th, 1865.

Lincoln, now 56 years old, had been elected to his second term on the previous November 8th. He directed his own campaign and easily won the office.

Lincoln will be inaugurated for his 2nd term in just 30 short days. The photo is just two months prior to General Robert E. Lee’s surrender (April 9th, 1865). Mr. Lincoln would be assassinated on April 14th, 1865, just 69 days after this image.

The photograph starkly depicts the toll that the war and the presidency had taken on Mr. Lincoln. My previous painting showed a handsome, healthy 49 year-old Lincoln.
